La Muralla Roja, a housing project designed by Ricardo Bofill located in Calpe, Spain, is the source of inspiration for this project. The result of this research is a pink suit with wide orange slits at the back. These sections, connected by reverse boxed pleats, can be fully opened to extend the back to more than twice its original width. On the inside faces it has loops to allow for a belt and thus adjust the suit to alter the silhouette of the loose back and fitted waist.
La Muralla Roja
The configuration of La Muralla Roja, in an evocation of the constructivist aesthetic, creates a series of galleries, staircases and courtyards connected to each other from where the houses are accessed. It is characterized by its reddish-pink hue and is in itself a clear reference to the popular Mediterranean and Arabic architecture, in particular the North African adobe towers and the casbah.
The exterior of the suit is made from a medium weight wool with a light satin finish that the student dyed by hand in the La Muralla Roja inspired color scheme. The student uses left-over fabrics and locally sourced material. Classic tailoring techniques have been used in its preparation.
